We create a legacy together! A Farewell Message to Busubo Mwewa, Our Esteemed Director

A Farewell Message to Busubo Mwewa, Our Esteemed Director.

We at the Ethical Society of Zambia have some important news to share with our members and supporters. Our esteemed director, Busubo Mwewa, has made the difficult decision to resign from his position effective from 31 December 2023. This is a huge loss for our organization, as Busubo has been a dedicated leader, a visionary thinker, and a source of inspiration and guidance for all of us within the Ethical Society of Zambia.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude for his remarkable contributions and to celebrate his achievements. Under his leadership, the Ethical Society of Zambia has flourished, achieving notable milestones and fostering a sense of unity and purpose among our members. He has also cultivated a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence within our organization. He has empowered us to pursue our passions, develop our skills, and contribute to our shared goals. He has also nurtured strong relationships with our partners and supporters, such as Humanists International, the global representative body of the humanist movement.

Some of the achievements that we can be proud of are:

Launching the Learning To Read Resource Center, where we offer books, magazines, DVDs, and internet access to the public, as well as host lectures, workshops, and debates on various topics related to humanism and social justice.

Organizing the annual Humanist Day celebration, where we invite prominent humanist speakers, artists, and activists from Zambia and abroad to share their insights and experiences with our members and guests.

Participating in various advocacy campaigns and coalitions on issues such as secularism, democracy, human rights, gender equality, environmental protection, and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Initiating and implementing several projects and programs that have made a positive impact on the lives of many Zambians, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized groups. One of these projects is Twapia! Feed our community, where we mobilize community members to cook food and provide a healthy meal for street kids, orphans, elderly, and people living with HIV/AIDS.

Busubo’s dedication and vision have been instrumental in these achievements, and we are truly grateful for his unwavering commitment. We would also like to share some personal stories and memories that illustrate Busubo’s remarkable qualities and impact. He has been a mentor, a friend, and a role model for many of us.

One of the most memorable moments I shared with Busubo was during a community event where we were providing meals and support to those in need. It was a hot and busy day, but Busubo’s unwavering dedication and compassionate spirit never faltered. He worked tirelessly, ensuring that every individual felt seen, heard, and cared for. He greeted everyone with a smile, listened to their stories, and offered words of encouragement and hope. His presence emanated warmth, empathy, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. In that moment, I realized the profound impact he had made not only within our organization but also in the lives of countless individuals in our community.

Another story that comes to my mind is when Busubo organized a young humanist workshop at a school. Where he delivered an engaging and enlightening presentation on humanism and its values. Busubo also facilitated a lively and interactive discussion among the participants, who shared their views and experiences on various topics related to humanism and social justice. Busubo’s enthusiasm and knowledge were evident as he asked insightful questions, offered constructive feedback, and challenged us to think critically and creatively. He also made sure that everyone felt comfortable and included, creating a friendly and respectful atmosphere. The workshop was a great success, and many participants expressed their appreciation and admiration for Busubo’s leadership and facilitation skills.

These are just some of the many examples of how Busubo has touched our lives and inspired us to be better humanists and better citizens. He has shown us what it means to live by the principles of empathy, kindness, and social responsibility. He has also shown us how to be courageous, resilient, and optimistic in the face of challenges and uncertainties.

Finally, as we bid farewell to Busubo, let us extend our heartfelt wishes for his future endeavors. His departure leaves a void that will not easily be filled, but we carry with us the invaluable lessons, inspiration, and connections he has bestowed upon us. Busubo, thank you for your unwavering dedication, your compassionate leadership, and the lasting impact you have made on our hearts and within our community.

Together, let us continue to forge a path towards a brighter future because we create a legace together.

Bob Siwale.

We create a legacy together!

A letter from Busubo!

Dear members and supporters of the Ethical Society of Zambia,

It is with mixed emotions that I write to inform you of my decision to resign from my role as the director of the Ethical Society of Zambia, effective from 31 December 2023. While this decision was not an easy one to make, I believe it is the right step for both myself and the organization. It has been a privilege and an honor to work alongside all of you, dedicated individuals, in serving the humanist community in Zambia over the past five years.

Reflecting on our collective achievements at the Ethical Society of Zambia, I take immense pride in what we have accomplished together. Through our collaborative efforts, we have witnessed growth in our membership, enhanced our visibility, and fostered stronger partnerships with fellow humanist organizations and stakeholders. Moreover, we have initiated and successfully implemented various projects and programs that have positively impacted the lives of countless Zambians, particularly those who are most vulnerable and marginalized.

Among the projects close to my heart is "Twapia! Feed our community." Through this initiative, we rallied community members to come together and prepare nutritious meals for street children, orphans, the elderly, and individuals living with HIV/AIDS. By addressing the issue of hunger and malnutrition, this project not only met a critical need but also nurtured a spirit of solidarity, compassion, and dignity among all participants.

Allow me to briefly outline the project's operations. Each week, we mobilized willing community members to cook and donate food to the project. Additionally, we collected food donations, including rice, beans, vegetables, oil, and salt, from local shops and markets. Subsequently, we distributed these meals to beneficiaries who either visited our center or were visited by our dedicated volunteers. In addition to providing sustenance, we also offered them water, soap, and sanitary pads. Our weekly efforts reached approximately 100 people, creating a tangible impact.

The foundation of this project lies in the humanist values of empathy, kindness, and social responsibility. We firmly believe that every individual deserves access to food and to be treated with respect and dignity. By sharing not only nourishment but also stories, we have fostered a stronger and more inclusive community. Furthermore, the project has served as a vehicle for raising awareness and promoting appreciation for humanism and its values within the wider community.

I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside each and every one of you and to have led the Ethical Society of Zambia. Throughout my tenure, I have gained invaluable knowledge, skills, and experience from our collective endeavors. Additionally, I have forged lasting friendships and connections that I will cherish for years to come.

While stepping down from my current position, please rest assured that I remain committed to this community. I will continue to serve on the board and offer my time and experience in any way possible to ensure our shared vision endures.

I kindly request your understanding and support regarding my decision. I assure you that I will exert my utmost effort to facilitate a seamless transition and transfer of my responsibilities. Even after my departure, I will remain available to address any questions or provide assistance as needed.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt wishes for your continued success. May our paths cross again, and may we keep in touch. Thank you for everything.

Sincerely,

Busubo Mwewa

AND SO IT BEGINS, A Directors story.

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTORS                                                           AND SO IT BEGINS.. The most difficult task during the start of any project is laying down the first stone. One of the most popular quotes today that is a typical example of this is "Rome wasn't built in a day", and true to the saying, the city of Rome  is a magnificent  and beautiful city that has been a symbol of greatness across thousands of years and it took thousands of years to be built too. The fact is, all good things take time. Excellence can not be achieved  overnight, and only real hard work produces the best of results. The Ethical Society of Zambia is an organization that has extremely clear goals, and we hope to make significant strides in the development of a community that has a passion to set the world alight with not just the promise of a better tomorrow but the commitment to being a direct influence of bringing to life a better world for generations to come. Happy Holidays To Everyone!

Happy Holidays! As this year comes to end, we should reflect on many things that have happened in our African secular community and what we can do to make things better next year. Even though we are very new on the scene, we already know about the continued abuse of human rights in many countries. The right to the freedom from and of religion is a fundamental human right that should be respected throughout this continent and we can fairly say that Africa has a lot of work to do with regards to allowing people the freedom of thought that they inherently deserve. The situation in Zambia and Southern Africa is far different than the Northern and Eastern regions of Africa. A lot of secular individuals face religious prejudice at work and at home. The severity of these cases however, far surpasses what is seen in Non-African or Non-Middle Eastern countries. The socio-economic status of many countries is marred by the theocratic forms of leadership that render anyo
